Hull City Hall - Ferens Art Gallery

Ferens Art Gallery is Hull’s premier Art Gallery and enjoyed a complete overhaul as part of the Hull City of Culture 2017 celebrations. It is also the home of the Turner Prize Awards 2017.

Project description

The Art Gallery was decorated as part of a wider upgrade scheme carried out by Geo Houlton & Sons Ltd. Our work involved the removal of all the old wallcoverings, hanging of new papers and full internal redecoration. The existing ornate cornices and ceilings where also treated for water staining before painting and the original delicate skylights were also refreshed.

Some of the ornate ceilings were 10m above ground level and access on the sprung timber floors was hampered by a weight limit, which made access to some surfaces quite challenging.

The internal paint system used was the specified Dulux Paints, on top of a special fire-rated lining apper which was require to meet building regulations. The colour scheme was chosen to compliment the artworks within the individual galleries. As the artwork is supposed to be viewed in a chronological order, the background colours of the galleries was chose to gets paler as the art moves into more recent eras.
